MAZON - The Mazon United Methodist Church held its first 5K Run/Walk on June 4, 2011.  The Lord truly blessed this event, which began at the Mazon City Park.

We had a total of 126 entries from 29 different towns, and have received many compliments from the runners and walkers who are enthusiastic about coming back next year.

Our 1st place overall male winner is pictured on the far left in the starting line photo, wearing Bib #98.  Raymond LaFree of Verona crossed the finish line first with a time of 18:40.

To the right of him is Deborah Renville of Bourbonnais, wearing Bib #82.  She was 1st overall female and finished with a time of 25:16.

Checking his watch to the right of Deborah is Jeff Virgo, also of Verona, wearing Bib #68.  Jeff placed 6th overall with a time of 24:13.  Behind him to the right is Dan Paulsen of Mazon, wearing Bib #112.  Dan finished 5th overall with a time of 24:04.  Wearing Bib #30 is Marybeth Dummer of Bradley, who placed 1st in her class; and next to her is Kibet Rono of Kankakee, wearing Bib #11.  He also placed first in his class, as well as 2nd overall, with a blazing time of 19:28.

If you would like to see a list of the rest of the participants, with their times and placementxs, Dave Bohlke, our official timer, has them listed on his website at www.races.co.nr

Many thanks to all of our sponsors, which include the Mazon Fire Department, Mazon Dungeon of Terror, Berkot's Super Foods, Cockream Motorsports, Andy's Auto Service, TNT Dance Studio, Rezin Orthopedics, Conrod Chiropractic Clinic, Mazon State Bank, Benson Insurance Agency, Mazon American Legion Post 352, Mark Wills Pioneer Seed, L-E Exterior Inc., Willoughby Automotive, and Amenda Motorsports.

We had many hard-working volunteers without whom this would not have been possible.  They include Pastor Mark Amenda and his wife, Lynne; Ed Fabian, who set up a sound system and played Contemporary Christian music throughout the event; Jeff Cockream, photographer; Bev Norton-Hacker and Ralph Binion, who ran the mid-race water station; Barb Bryant, Sue Warning, and Roxy McKinley, who ran the food table; and Tina Brookman, Jamie, Brookman, and Randy Lowery who gave out goodie bags with T-shirts to pre-registered entrants.

Also, Deb Zielinski and Dawn Madia, who took race day entries; Tommy McGowan, Erika Welch, and Dawn Madia, who assisted the official time, Dave Bohlke, at the finish line; Joe and Vicki Swithin, who managed post-race water; and many who guided runners along the course, including Dick Ely, Forrest and Jane McCormack, Glen Fabian (calling out one-mile marker times), and some of those already mentioned doing double duty.
