May 4th is an important day for Americans.  Many Christians are unaware that they live in a nation that actually has a law in place that requires our President to proclaim a National Day of Prayer each year on the first Thursday in May.  #119, Title 36, Public Law 105-225 states: The President shall issue each year a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a National Day of Prayer on which the people of the United States may turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals.

As citizens and residents of the United States, and as believers in Christ Jesus, we not only have a spiritual responsibility according to 1 Timothy 2:1-2 to pray, but a civic duty as well to heed our President’s call to stand in the gap for our nation. Who but God’s people have the ability to enter into the very throne room of Heaven with prayers and petitions!
The theme this year is For Your Great Name’s Sake! Hear Us... Forgive Us...Heal Us! This was taken from Daniel 9:19, which says, “O Lord, Listen! O Lord, Forgive! O Lord, Hear and Act! For Your Sake, O My God...”.

Scripture tells us again and again that our fervent prayer is effective; that our loving God responds to His children’s earnest pleas in mighty ways that avail much, and ultimately determine the course of history.  (information from the official website for the National Day of Prayer)

Last year I was privileged to be among the pastors who said a prayer from the front of the Grundy County Courthouse on the National Day of Prayer.  This year I am unable to do so due to my obligations at Evenglow.  But I will be with them in spirit, as seven different pastors lift up a prayer for the seven official categories designated for this event, beginning at noon this coming Thursday.  If you are able to be in Morris at that time, please join them.  But even if not, please take the time to pray for our nation.  Think of it as signing a petition.  Let me read you something from “We The People” on the website

“The right to petition your government is guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. We the People is a platform that empowers the American public to take this action like never before – it’s a way for anybody, anywhere, to speak directly to the government and become an agent for change. With We the People, you can easily create a petition online, share it, and collect signatures. If you gather 100,000 signature in 30 days, we’ll review your petition, make sure it gets in front of the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response. Petitioning has the potential to enact real change, but it’s also your fundamental right as an American citizen, and an opportunity to connect with a community of like-minded people who are invested in making a change.”

The same principle works with prayer.  While God does indeed hear the prayers of each individual that comes to Him in sincere faith, just imagine if 100,000, or even 100,000,000, Christians lift up the same prayer on the same day!

The seven centers of power that the National Day of Prayer Task Force wants Americans to pray for are: GOVERNMENT - Ask God to grant our leaders wisdom, discernment, and hearts open to His will (1 Timothy 2:1-2, Romans 13:1-2), CHURCH - Pray for churches and as God to preserve and protect them, as He inspires and empowers them to equip His saints (Colossians 2:6-8, Ephesians 4:11-12), MILITARY - Pray for God to grant our military and its leaders courage, protection, and strength for them and their families (2 Chronicles 32:6-8, Romans 13:1).  FAMILY - Pray for the Lord to protect and strengthen families, marriages and bring healing to relationships (Mark 3:25, Romans 12:9-13), EDUCATION - Pray for God’s presence in education and ask Him for teachers and administrators who honor His statues, protect our children, and inspire them to discover their God-given calling (Proverbs 2:3-6, Proverbs 8:10-11), MEDIA - Pray for Christian influence in the media, from movies, television, and radio, to newspaper and magazine publishers (Philippians 4:8, Psalm 119:9), BUSINESS - Pray for divine intervention in our national, state, and local economies (Exodus 31:3-4, 1 Chronicles 29:17).  Note that these are also printed on the back of the bookmarks I gave you.  Each of these centers affect every American is some way.  Each of these is vital to our country’s well-being and to it being a recipient of the Lord’s blessing.  So please take some time out of your busy day this Thursday and lift these centers of power up to the Lord, that each would be guided by God’s Holy Word, and their actions be in accordance with His Will.  Your words don’t have to be perfect, for God hears what is in your heart.  Remember His promise, If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”  (2 Chronicles 7:14)  Our beloved America needs both God’s forgiveness and His healing.  And your prayer can make a difference!  As I mentioned earlier, the Apostle James said, “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”  (James 5:16).

So I implore you…  Pray for America.  Amen.

The children gave out official National Day of Prayer bookmarks to everyone, after impressing me with the knowledge of the US Government.  We then prayed together for our nation and its leaders...
