Land of the Free

America became a free nation on July 4, 1776.  The Declaration of Independence was signed by our nation’s founders at the Second Continental Congress meeting at the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia.  It announced that the Thirteen Colonies at war with the Kingdom of Great Britain would regard themselves as thirteen independent sovereign states, no longer under British rule.  Within this document is one of the best-known sentences in the English language, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

But while America is truly the greatest country on earth, one that stands for equality, freedom, and the rights of each human being, how does this play out in the reality of our lives here?  2018 figures won’t be out until September, but according to the FBI, in 2017 the estimated number of murders in the nation was 17,284*.  Many states still provide legal abortion, and physician-assisted suicide is currently legal in nine US states and the District of Columbia**.   So how many American citizens were actually denied their right to life?

Our liberties such as freedom of speech are also under constant threat.  In the incessant push for ‘political correctness’ Christians are being pressured into using language that eliminates talk of sin, judgment, need for redemption, hell, or anything else that some might deem ‘offensive’.  People’s feelings have become more important than the fate of their eternal soul.  Liberty from anything that might bruise our egos has been more important in this country than liberty to share the Word of God and hence share with others how to have freedom from all that separates us from God, both here and for all eternity.

And the pursuit of happiness?  If you consider legalized marijuana the pursuit of happiness, then yes, I guess we now have that right.  But is that God’s idea of happiness?  True joy is not found in drugs or alcohol, not in piling up earthly treasures, not in the acquisition of power and status.  True joy only comes through faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, who died to give us freedom from sin, death, and the devil; to give us rights granted only to children of God; and to give us eternal life, liberty and happiness.

So while America is the land of the free here on earth, the true land of the free is the kingdom of heaven.  We, as Christians, are enjoying a foretaste of freedom through Christ as Jesus promised us when He said “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36), but we will not fully realize the true magnitude of that freedom until we step foot on the heavenly shore.

In heaven we will be completely free from sin.  Here, although we are justified through Christ and are free from the condemnation of sin, we are still living in our physical bodies which bear the curse of sin, and we are subject to its fleshly desires which would tempt us to indulge in that which is sinful and detrimental to our spiritual well-being.  But once we our living in heaven in our glorified bodies, we will no longer be subject not only to the effects of sin, but free from the desire to sin as well. 

And because we will be completely free from sin, we will be free from the end result of sin, which is death.  We will enjoy everlasting life in a world that has never been corrupted by sickness or crime.  There will be no hatred, no fear, no sadness, no anxiety - indeed no thoughts or emotions that exude anything other than love, peace, and joy.  And our bodies and minds will always be perfect and never grow old.

Yes, we will be completely free from all that is evil.  From Satan’s influence, from our sinful desires, and from all that would cause harm, deceit, and destruction.

We will be free from darkness and walk in constant light that casts no shadow, but permeates all that exists.

In addition, we will have complete understanding of all that perplexes us now.  We will see how God’s perfect plan has played out in our lives and in the world at large.  We will comprehend how God’s love through Jesus Christ created and orders all of space, time, and matter, as well as all that exists in the spiritual world.

How glorious that will be!  I pray that you are among those who will experience the perfect freedom of heaven - eternal life, liberty, and happiness.  Amen.
